Starry Starry Gnu London by Alan Shulman

Alan Shulman
When he was a kid, Alan and his dad spent weekends at Central Park, Yankee Stadium and the Museum of Modern Art. As an eight-year-old he was enrolled in the museum school and began to paint with bright temperas. Though he loved to paint, he was true to the caveat of a first generation immigrant and trained for a profession rather than pursuing his art. He reasoned that, as an architect, he could combine art and business. Yet, he found painting increasingly compelling. The works of Matisse, Chagall and Kandinsky inspired him to experiment with the magic of paint. In addition to architecture, he studied sculpture and painting at the Illinois Institute in Chicago with Weighardt and Barr. He later ventured to Montreal to learn from Seymour Segal; Japan, Denmark and Mexico to learn from other artists. His sketchbooks, studies and layout evolved into paintings on canvas. Alan says he's driven by the elements of light, color and texture to see if he can use their effects to capture, the emotion of a time, person, people, place or thing.

His recent projects include a series of haunting portraits of the ill-fated citizens of Zinkov, a village in Ukraine totally annihilated by the Nazis. He's currently working on landscapes commissioned in NH, VT, NY and FL. In production is New London Chronicles, a sketchbook of his adopted New England town.
